The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) New Orleans field office is reviewing reports that millions of driver’s licenses from across the U.S. and Canada have been leaked to the dark web. An independent journalist from Virginia reported the issue, stating that he found a site selling digital scans of over 153 million driver’s licenses, including those belonging to his friends and family, and one belonging to the assistant director of the FBI.
Some individuals reported that they had recently rented cars, and others reported uploading their identification to IDScan.net for verification. The journalist later provided an update, saying the website had been taken down and its existence could not be verified.
“The FBI can confirm that it is looking into the incident,” a spokesperson for the FBI stated. “Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we decline to comment further.”
